Canada's cannabis law is making things weird for people who sell pot paraphernalia | CBC Radio

CBC

On the day marijuana became legal in Canada, Jon Keefe, a co-owner of a cannabis accessories store in St. John's, N.L., had a "strange visit" from the province's new pot regulators. There were several customers browsing through Dabber Hashery, which carries items like glassware cleaners and electronic vaporizers, when two inspectors from the Newfoundland Labrador Liquor Corporation (NCL) walked in.

Smart And Safe Storage Ideas For Your Cannabis

Cannabis packaging in Canada is standardized for your safety by Health Canada. That does not mean you can't take extra care for safety and longevity of your products.

1. Store Your Products Away From Pets and Children

This is a no-brainer.  We all need to work together to keep pets and children safe.  First, keep all cannabis in the original packages you receive them in. Why? Health Canada has created those labels for your safety.   You will also want to store any cannabis products out of reach of tiny hands or paws. You may want to even invest in child-safety locks (or real locks, in case of youth and teens) on drawers and/or cupboards where you store your cannabis.  Further, it's a great idea if you are purchasing air-tight containers to further product your products, that you look for one that has child-safety in mind.

2. Store Your Products in Cool Temperatures

Temperature is extremely important in the storage of cannabis. Similar to a fine wine, It is best aged in cool, dry and dark places. If the temperature is too warm the heat can cause essential oils and nutrients run to dry out, which can affect the potency and also provide a harsh smoking experience. While too much moisture can create a perfect environment for bacteria and mold to grow on your cannabis. Keep in mind that organic matter like mold and mildew thrive in temperatures of 25C to 30C so you ideally want to keep your cannabis in temperatures below this.

3. Keep Your Cannabis Out of Direct Sunlight/UV Rays

As many of us are already aware, the UV rays in sunlight have a negative breakdown a number of materials and direct exposure generally has a negative impact on most things in its way. The same is true for the impact that UV rays have on cannabis. A study conducted at the University of London in the 1970sconcluded that light was the single biggest factor in the degradation of cannabinoids. The same study also concluded that when stored under the proper condition cannabinoids can maintain stability for up to two years, though it can remain effective and safe to consume for a longer period of time as the essential oils tend to slowly break down over time. It is also important to note that storing your cannabis out of direct light will also help you control the temperature (which as mentioned before also affects the freshness and quality).

4. Store Your Cannabis in an Air Tight Container

While oxygen is super important while growing the plant, controlling the level of oxygen after it is harvested is extremely important. Too much oxygen can quicken the degradation of the cannabinoids, which will negatively impact its medicinal benefits. The best way to ensure too much oxygen doesn’t access your medical cannabis is to get yourself a high-quality air-tight storage container. A great option is Canadian brand Club Four20 as a part of the specially curated “Cannabis Kits” offers top of the line, scent proof, airtight, pharma grade, glass cannabis container (14 Gram Capacity). An additional benefit is that the container is also childproof. This ensures that children are unable to access your medical cannabis which provides added security for safe storage within your home.

If you are storing medical cannabis within your home please always ensure that it is within a childproof container, and stored out of reach of the children within your home.

Understanding Cannabis Accessories: Tools for Rolling, Storing, and Smoking Cannabis

When it comes to using cannabis there are a lot of tools and accessories. Legalization and modern smoking technology have fuelled a renaissance of sorts for the cannabis industry.

Here is a quick guide on various cannabis accessories and their purposes.

Cannabis Storage

Storage is used to preserve the quality of the cannabis. Typically, something that is airtight and doesn't let smells escape is ideal.

Mason Jars

One of the most popular ways to store cannabis is in a simple mason jar. Mason jars are airtight and can keep cannabis "fresh" for months. Either a twist top or airlock can be used.

Air-Vac Containers

There are many companies currently offering air-vac containers for cannabis storage. Air-vac containers seal the cannabis in. A button on the top of the container releases all of the air, meaning that cannabis can remain "fresh" for a very long period of time.

As far as storage goes, imagination is the only limitation. There are also "top-of-the-line" options such as Cannador or the Tree Trunk.

Smoking Paraphernalia

Rolling

Marijuana cigarettes (or joints) can be created using rolling paper. Joints are easy to carry and consume.

Here is a guide on how-to roll joints.

Papers

When it comes to rolling marijuana cigarettes (joints) paper quality is essential. The high-quality paper isn't going to tear easily. A higher quality paper will also burn longer than low-quality paper.

Trays

Rolling trays are little trays that you roll joints on. Usually, they have indentations in them that collect the scraps of cannabis that fall out when rolling a joint. These can be made out of any material, but wood is a "go-to."

Rolling Machines

For people that have never rolled joints or people who want to simplify the process, rolling machines are an option. These machines automatically roll joints (or at the very least make the process easier.) These come in all shapes and sizes. Some of them are fully automatic, while others require partial manual rolling.

Filters

Contrary to popular belief, filters will not reduce the amount of THC that you get when smoking cannabis. Filters do, however, help cool the smoke down.

Pipes and Bongs

Pipes and Bongs are another popular way to smoke cannabis. Bongs typically have harsher smoke intake than pipes.

Pipes

Different types of pipes can affect the smoking process. Pipes are usually made out of either glass (the most popular type), wood, or metal. Each one has a different "feel" dependent upon the material. There are many different styles of pipes.

  • Chillums are straightforward. They are small, portable, and easy to use.
  • One-hitters are small and for smoking a small amount of cannabis or tobacco. These fit easily into your pocket and usually look like a cigarette.
  • Stealth or sneak pipes are small, foldable, and usually easily concealed. These could be in the form of any household object.

Bongs

Bongs produce lots of smoke. Modern designs (such as the multi-chamber design) have smoother smoke intake and produce cooler temperature smoke.

One of the most important aspects of bong selection is the type of material.

  • Glass is cheap and won't affect the taste of cannabis.
  • Plastic is super-cheap and super-durable.
  • Metal is the most durable and will probably last a lifetime.
  • Bamboo is also durable while also having a unique look and feel to it.
  • Ceramic usually has interesting designs. Ceramic bongs are often more of a decorative piece because they are heavy and aren't as durable as plastic, metal, or bamboo.

Another thing to think about is the type of bong design. This will affect the "harshness" of your smoke intake.

  • Straight-tube bongsbeaker-bottom bongs, and round-base bongs are your "ordinary" bongs. They are simple and usually cheap. The only difference between them is the shape at the bottom.
  • Bubbler bongs have a percolator in them, so the smoke will cool down faster and filter better. Note: This effect causes the water to bubble hence the name.
  • Carburetor bongs are bongs that have a hole in them. When you cover the hole with your finger and release it, the smoke intake is going to be very strong. Carburetor bongs typically have the harshest draw of any bongs.
  • Multi-chamber bongs are where bongs start getting complex. These bongs have multiple chambers so the smoke is filtered twice. This leads to a smoother smoke intake with cooler smoke.

Vaporizers

Vaporizers are one of the newer players in the cannabis smoking game. Vaporizers burn cannabis at a level that is hot enough to vaporize the marijuana but not hot enough to burn it.

Vaporizers come in all shapes and sizes. Since vaporizers don't fill your lungs with smoke they are considered easier to smoke for some people.

Other Cannabis Accessories

There are plenty of other accessories to discuss when it comes to cannabis consumption.

Grinders

Grinders are devices that break up marijuana so that it fits into whatever apparatus you are smoking out of. Typically, they are portable and easy to use. It’s as simple as placing the marijuana into the grinder and twist.

There are many accessory options available for cannabis consumption. Different people use different equipment. It’s a matter of personal preference. Choose whats best for you.

Remember to always consult your doctor before beginning any type of wellness treatment.
