I wish I knew more about CBD for pets when my dog was still around. She was a chocolate lab, and like most big dogs.. she really struggled getting around in her later years. Especially in winter. I would have done anything to help her, and I’m 100% sure CBD would have been super beneficial for her.

Cannabis and Cancer Pain in Pets: Does it Really Work?

Could CBD help a pet suffering from Cancer pain?

Recently, you're hearing a lot more about pet owners giving cannabis (CBD) to their dogs or cats for various illnesses. While it might have sounded strange to do this a decade or more ago, the attitude about cannabis and its role in medicine continues to evolve.

Now that we know medical marijuana can help human beings, the same thing works on pets if carefully monitored.

At stake is being able to help manage one particular problem in older pets: Cancer pain.

Eliminating Cancer Drugs

One of the biggest issues with pet owners when their dog or cat gets cancer is veterinarians frequently prescribe cancer medicines with major side effects. Avma.org notes drugs like tramadol are a good example of what cancer drugs often do to animals.

When dogs take this drug, it usually makes them sleep most of the time. Even if stopping the cancer pain, it's not giving dogs much life quality.

Other side effects associated with this drug include vomiting, diarrhea, anxiety, and even tremors. At one time, this was the best you could give your dog if they suffered from cancer.

Cannabis is becoming the new alternative to these drugs, giving pets suffering from cancer pain a new way to live without feeling fatigued.

How Are Dogs Taking Cannabis for Cancer Pain?

Cannabis oil is the most popular method used to provide cannabis for dogs. However, it's usually more effective when mixing different cannabinoids together. The most common ones are using a careful balance of THC and CBD.

Since THC can create an intoxicating effect in dogs, you have to carefully balance the amount they consume. Despite life-threatening risks from THC being very rare, an accidental overdose could become fatal without careful dosage.

In most cases, cannabis oil is taken orally for dogs. Providing it in dog treats is one good way, though tinctures can bring faster-acting results if your dog's cancer pain is severe.

How Are Cats Taking Cannabis for Cancer Pain?

It's possible for cats to take cannabis products in capsule or tincture form. Yet, veterinarians point out cannabis shouldn't become a sole method of cancer pain treatment. Most vets use cannabis with a mix of other treatment methods.

Still, the amount of THC given in each treatment will likely determine whether your cat will become more sedated or stimulated.

If you want them to live a more physically active life again, you'll have to work carefully to find the right mix of THC (and perhaps CBD) to help your cat feel better.

Real-World Results for Dogs

The best way to see how cannabis is helping dogs with cancer is to look at real-world examples. One story of an American staffordshire terrier cross named Muttley tells about the severe nausea he'd experience due to being on cancer medications.

After his owners prepared for the end of his life, their veterinarian gave Muttley low-dose cannabis oil. Immediately, it gave him more energy and a renewed life. Despite having terminal cancer, it's allowed Muttley to live more comfortably, including getting natural "munchies" for a little weight gain.

Real-World Results for Cats

Another great story comes out of the U.K. and a cat dealing with cancer, specifically in his paw. Named Ginge, this cat was initially prescribed steroids and antibiotics to help treat this unusual tumour. Nothing was working until given cannabis oil.

On top of the cancer, Ginge had two strokes, an enlarged liver, and significant weight loss. After only two days use of cannabis oil in his food, the tumour in his paw shrunk.

It allowed Ginge to gain weight and bring his old energy back. It's a true miraculous recovery that tells you the realities of what can happen with your pet. Not all results are the same, but it's worth realising the possibilities as Canada gears up for cannabis legalisation this summer.
