My Blue Dream

I by no means consider myself I canna-connoisseur I'm experimenting like any other canna-curious individual out there. However, the one piece of advice that I have taken to heart is to explore the various strains and the effect they have on me personally (as strains can affect each individual differently).

Thus far, I've had the pleasure of trying out "Girl Scout Cookies", "Sour Diesel", and most recently "Blue Dream"

Every strain has its time and place, but I have to admit that "Blue Dream" has been my favourite thus far. Blue Dream is said to be a Sativa dominant hybrid. After vaping it I experienced an unreal amount of focus for a few hours. I was focused in a way I have rarely experienced in my life...LASER FOCUS. I also found it really got my creative juices flowing. I am admittedly a natural creative, but again it had me in this zone of extreme creativity that I rarely experience. Overall, I felt relaxed, calm and extremely productive.

To be fair, I'll also share a quick review of my experience with other two strains mentioned earlier. Sour Diesel (a sativa) I would say is my second favourite. It made me feel relaxed yet, energized at the same time and was an overall good feeling.I found it was great for daytime use when I need to be alert. While Girl Scout Cookie (Indica dominant Hybrid) left me feeling quite relaxed, and often made me sleepy. I generally would use this shortly before bed.

Lack of Communication about Medical Marijuana Use between Doctors and Their Patients

Introduction: Medical marijuana is now permitted in most states, but it is not clear whether primary care physicians (PCPs) are aware of or recommend its use in their patients.

Methods: We distributed paired surveys to PCPs and their patients to assess the frequency of patient marijuana use and communication with PCPs about use.

Results: Of 242 patients surveyed, 22% reported marijuana use in the past 6 months, and 61% of these identified as medical marijuana users. PCPs did not complete state forms to recommend medical marijuana for any of the surveyed medical marijuana users. PCPs were aware of marijuana use in their patients only 53% of the time. PCPs identified conditions they believed could be adversely affected by marijuana use in 31% of users.

Conclusion: There is poor communication between patients and PCPs about medical marijuana use, which is being sanctioned by physicians other than patients' PCPs. We suggest more frequent assessment of and discussion about marijuana use in patients, particularly in states that have approved medical marijuana.

The Ontario Cannabis Store (OCS) Warns Customers of Canada Post Data Breach

In a letter sent to customers, The Ontario Cannabis Store (OCS) acknowledges that they were made aware of a data breach by Canada Post on November 1st.

About 2% of orders had their information accessed by an individual. Information accessed includes postal codes, the name or initials of the person who signed for the order upon delivery, the date of delivery, the OCS reference number and the Canada Post tracking number.

The delivery address, payment information and contents of the order were not accessed, the OCS said.

“Since November 1, the OCS has worked closely with Canada Post to identify the cause of this issue and to prevent any further unauthorized access to customer delivery information,” CEO Patrick Ford said in the letter.

In a statement released to CityNews, Canada Post acknowledged the breach, saying “both organizations have been working closely together since that time to investigate and take immediate action.

“As a result, important fixes have been put in place by both organizations to prevent any further unauthorized access to customer information.

“We have also shared with OCS that we are confident that the customer who accessed the information only shared it with Canada Post and deleted it without distributing further.”

This breach affects approximately 4500 customers and deals another hard blow to the Ontario Cannabis Store which has been riddled with stock and fulfillment issues since day one.

Smart And Safe Storage Ideas For Your Cannabis

Cannabis packaging in Canada is standardized for your safety by Health Canada. That does not mean you can't take extra care for safety and longevity of your products. 

1. Store Your Products Away From Pets and Children

This is a no-brainer.  We all need to work together to keep pets and children safe.  First, keep all cannabis in the original packages you receive them in. Why? Health Canada has created those labels for your safety.   You will also want to store any cannabis products out of reach of tiny hands or paws. While too much moisture can create a perfect environment for bacteria and mold to grow on your cannabis. Keep in mind that organic matter like mold and mildew thrive in temperatures of 25C to 30C so you ideally want to keep your cannabis in temperatures below this. 

3. Keep Your Cannabis Out of Direct Sunlight/UV Rays

As many of us are already aware, the UV rays in sunlight have a negative breakdown a number of materials and direct exposure generally has a negative impact on most things in its way. The same is true for the impact that UV rays have on cannabis. A study conducted at the University of London in the 1970sconcluded that light was the single biggest factor in the degradation of cannabinoids. The same study also concluded that when stored under the proper condition cannabinoids can maintain stability for up to two years, though it can remain effective and safe to consume for a longer period of time as the essential oils tend to slowly break down over time. It is also important to note that storing your cannabis out of direct light will also help you control the temperature (which as mentioned before also affects the freshness and quality).

While oxygen is super important while growing the plant, controlling the level of oxygen after it is harvested is extremely important. Too much oxygen can quicken the degradation of the cannabinoids, which will negatively impact its medicinal benefits. Microdosing: The Benefits, The Risks and How it Works

Generally, when you hear about the cannabis industry, a lot of the discussion circles around recreational use and getting high. Yet, there is a whole other side to cannabis use that excludes the high that's becoming a growing trend. This is where microdosing comes in.

What is Microdosing and How Does it Work?

Microdosing is based on the concept of using the most minimal amount of THC, the psychoactive compound found in cannabis, to reap the medical benefits of cannabis. The concept of microdosing is the idea that less is most definitely more. Low doses can deliver one effect while high doses can bring upon the opposite effect. Using smaller doses of THC allows the body to enjoy the amazing health benefits of cannabis without the effect of getting high.

The concept of microdosing is not a new one, this practice has become more widespread in the 21st century. Microdosing gained traction a few years ago with the drug LSD. Psychedelic microdosing is a practice to use sub-threshold doses of psychedelic drugs in an attempt to improve creativity and focus, boost energy level, attain emotional balance and to help with depression and addiction. The long-term effects of dosing LSD came under fire and is surrounded by controversy as it is illegal and can be dangerous.

For cannabis however, the sub-therapeutic microdose is unlikely to produce whole-body effects, but rather effects the body on a cellular level. Although microdosing is most commonly associated with THC, addition of CBD in equal ratio can be beneficial and the combination tends to give a wider therapeutic window. CBD can also be used solely, however it is more expensive than THC products and should be avoided during the evening as it can act as a mental stimulant.

What are the Benefits of Microdosing?

The cannabis microdosing method can help increase mental focus, improve creativity, aid in sleeping habits and elevate mood. Additionally, due to the medical benefits gained through controlled consumption, it is being used to treat many conditions such as:

  • Stress
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Pain associated with chronic conditions like fibromyalgia and multiple sclerosis
  • Inflammation
  • Gastrointestinal disturbances
  • Insomnia

What Method Should I Use?

There are various methods of microdosing. The most popular is smoking, but it has been found to be the most expensive with the least control over dosage unless it's vapour. Vaping allows microdosing accuracy, is less wasteful as it extracts cannabis compounds more efficiently and is a cleaner experience because it doesn't contain the harmful carcinogens of smoking. Edibles are also common but caution should be exercised as dosage ranges between products, and intensity and onset of effects may vary between individuals. Oils and tinctures are also an alternative to smoking and are becoming increasingly popular.

How Much Should I Microdose?

There is no universal way or standard amount to microdose. However, there are many arguments about what the right dose is. While some will say 5-10mg of THC, others recommend an even lower dose at 2.5mg. There are also some products on the market that are CBD dominant so they contain very little or no THC at all. The reality is microdosing is extremely personal, as each individual can respond uniquely to dose amounts of THC and/or CBD for a variety of factors.

“The goal is to use the dose that gives the most minimal noticeable effect,” 

says Dustin Sulak osteopathic physician who uses low-dose cannabis treatments for his patients. The main takeaway here is that with microdosing slow and steady definitely wins the race. Start small and work your way up.

The Risks of Microdosing

While microdosing is a great concept, it does have its risks particularly with the use of edibles. Some brands don't offer edibles with smaller doses of THC or don't provide detailed labeling that lists the volume of THC per portion size, which can make it difficult to estimate potency per bite, especially for microdosing.

There is, however a huge trend growing for cannabis microdosing and products are emerging that offer an accurate microdose of THC and/or CBD. From 2.5mg of THC per serving to 5mg and 10mg, cannabis infused products are appearing in legal places around North America. These products include mints, gummies, teas, oils, tinctures, honey sticks, granola squares and even bite-sized chocolates.

Another drawback of microdosing with edibles is the delayed reaction to the THC. Many users will assume that the dose wasn’t strong enough because they can’t immediately feel any effect. As a result, they increase the dose, which leads to accidentally taking too large of a dose when in actual fact the original dose was enough. Be sure to stick to the dose recommended by your physician.

Trends and Takeaways

While microdosing has made substantial headway in the arena of health as a treatment option for specific conditions, it also serves another purpose outside of its medicinal benefits. Many have turned to microdosing for professional and personal reasons. Small doses of THC is believed to increase creativity and mental focus so many use it as a way to be increasingly productive at work and for overall wellness, without the risk of the stigma associated with cannabis and being high.

The takeaway here is that microdosing is intended to be a safe and healthy way to reap the physical and mental benefits that cannabis has to offer. Proponents of microdosing hope that one day it will become so normalized it will be viewed in a similar manner as taking daily multivitamins.     I think most importantly we need to break down the stigma of what cannabis consumption actually is / does. I'm not advocating for taking bong rips at red lights, but heavy users are going to be unfairly targeted by any kind of blood test. We're looking at past experience with alcohol and trying to apply the same rules, alcohol is not cannabis. Cannabis is much more, and far less dangerous in residual concentration.

Is it really necessary you get behind the wheel when you consume ANYTHING that could affect your ability to drive.. EVEN NyQuil- never mind the dangers of alcohol and being high. And if you don't care about yourself getting from point A to B please think of all of the cars around you, and who might be in them(children, grandparents, a single mother of 4, a dad on his way home). Understanding Consumption Methods: Smoking to Edibles

As someone who's decided to try cannabis to help manage pain or other illness, there isn't any better time to find a wide variety of products. This is good news for you if you have some health problems and want alternatives to how you consume cannabis.

Not all consumption methods are viable for cannabis users. What methods are available now, though? Since the last time you looked, other choices have probably gone mainstream.

Let's look at six specific types of cannabis consumption methods and their pros and cons.

Smoking Cannabis

Even you may remember doing this if you're old enough to have lived in the 1960s during the Counterculture Movement. Maybe you moved here to Canada from the U.S. to avoid the Vietnam War in those days, leading to a lifelong residency.

Cannabis was big in those days, but it was still illegal. Now with cannabis legalized here in Canada later this year, you have the choice to smoke cannabis freely.

Most studies show smoking cannabis gives you a psychoactive effect within minutes. In this regard, you can say smoking cannabis gives you the fastest results of any current method available. Yet, if your lungs can't hack smoke, it's obviously not the best choice.

Also, you have the problem of smoking around other people who don't want to contend with second-hand smoke in their vicinity.

Smoking products still range from classic joints to blunts.

Vaping

The vaping method of consuming cannabis has become one of the most popular. While it's a bit similar to smoking, it heats the cannabis rather than burns it. For those with lung sensitivity, this is often considered a better option.

Debates still rage, though, about whether vaping is really a healthier alternative to the smoking method. Vape pens are now very small, allowing you to consume cannabis without creating a large smoke cloud. 

Tinctures

Cannabis tinctures, commonly referred to as green or golden dragon, are alcohol-based cannabis extracts. Arguably the most convenient method available for cannabis is tinctures. It's also the fastest method available for receiving medicinal benefits next to smoking.

It's actually one of the oldest cannabis consumption methods, going back more than 90 years in usage before cannabis prohibition began.

In liquid form, you'll feel results in about 15 minutes. 

Dabbing

A more recent consumption method is dabbing, which gives quite a powerful dose to those taking cannabis for medicinal purposes.

For dabbing, you're heating a small amount of cannabis concentrate, which is known as a "dab." You do this on a hot surface where it creates a strong vapour to inhale.

The method often involves a blowtorch, so it might seem crude. Thanks to an increase potency, it's worth it to those who want a fast pain reliever.

Topicals

Being able to apply cannabis like a skin cream is becoming a very popular way to consume without smoking or inhaling. If all of the above are perhaps too complicated for you, simply using a topical system will still give you a fast effect.

Best of all, these are used for localized pain relief on your body. You'll be able to find these in lotions and even patches. Just be sure to wash your hands before applying a topical product.

Edibles or Infusion

No doubt you've already heard some about edibles. Cannabis edibles are food products that have been infused with cannabinoids - mostly commonly THC. Nearly any food product can be infused. Popular types of edibles are desserts and snacks, but you're seeing an emergence of regular meals and even beverages being infused. To consume you simply eat/digest a portion of the infused food item. Do keep in mind that the onset of the "high" in edibles is delayed when compared to other consumption methods. 

If you do choose to use edibles please use extreme caution and store them out of reach of children as they do pose a medical threat.

​Why You Should Never Vape MCT Oil

Never vape MCT oil? Yes, you heard correctly.  

It is extremely dangerous to your health when the oil becomes heated and inhaled. Propylene glycol [PG], vegetable glycerin [VG], polyethylene glycol 400 [PEG 400], and medium chain triglycerides [MCT, like coconut oil) that are heated to 230°C are all problematic for vaping.  Some are better than others, but all should really be avoided. 

What are medical professionals worried about in regards to inhaling oils, like MCT oil (ie. coconut oil)?  Bottom line, they are worried about lung infections, and serious ones at that.

Lipid pneumonia or lipoid pneumonia is a specific form of lung inflammation (pneumonia) that develops when lipids enter the bronchial tree. The disorder is sometimes called cholesterol pneumonia in cases where that lipid is a factor.

Study: Carbonyl Compounds Produced by Vaporizing Cannabis Oil Thinning Agents

The Background on The Research

Objective: Cannabis use has increased in the United States, particularly the use of vaporized cannabis oil, which is often mixed with thinning agents for use in vaporizing devices. E-cigarette research shows that heated thinning agents produce potentially harmful carbonyls; however, similar studies have not been conducted (1) with agents that are commonly used in the cannabis industry and (2) at temperatures that are appropriate for cannabis oil vaporization. The goal of this study was to determine whether thinning agents used in the cannabis industry produce potentially harmful carbonyls when heated to a temperature that is appropriate for cannabis oil vaporization.

Design: Four thinning agents (propylene glycol [PG], vegetable glycerin [VG], polyethylene glycol 400 [PEG 400], and medium chain triglycerides [MCT]) were heated to 230°C and the resulting vapors were tested for acetaldehyde, acrolein, and formaldehyde. Each agent was tested three times.

Setting/Location: Testing was conducted in a smoking laboratory.

Outcome measures: Carbonyl levels were measured in micrograms per puff block.

Results: Analyses showed that PEG 400 produced significantly higher levels of acetaldehyde and formaldehyde than PG, MCT, and VG. Formaldehyde production was also significantly greater in PG compared with MCT and VG. Acrolein production did not differ significantly across the agents.

Conclusions: PG and PEG 400 produced high levels of acetaldehyde and formaldehyde when heated to 230°C. Formaldehyde production from PEG 400 isolate was particularly high, with one inhalation accounting for 1.12% of the daily exposure limit, nearly the same exposure as smoking one cigarette. Because PG and PEG 400 are often mixed with cannabis oil, individuals who vaporize cannabis oil products may risk exposure to harmful formaldehyde levels. Although more research is needed, consumers and policy makers should consider these potential health effects before use and when drafting cannabis-related legislation.

Health Risks of Cannabis

With the legalization of recreational Cannabis going into effect in Canada in only a few short months, and more locations around the globe considering it - there's naturally a lot of excitement about being able to use the herb more freely. As exciting as it is, with every good thing in life there are often risks associated. In this particular case, there are a number of health risks that every user or potential user should definitely consider.

Short Term Effects of Cannabis Use

The short terms health effects of Cannabis use are the ones that are more commonly known and include but not limited to:

  • Sleepiness (fatigue)
  • Increased Heart Rate
  • Decreased Blood Pressure
  • Anxiety
  • Short Term Memory Loss
  • Impaired Ability to React
  • Impaired Judgement
  • Delayed Reaction Time

Long Term Effects of Cannabis Use

There are many therapeutic reasons for long term cannabis use, however the reality is there are health risks that are lesser known, and can be far more serious in nature. These risks tend to affect the lungs, the brain, and your mental health.

Cannabis and your Lungs - While considered healthier than tobacco, long term consistent smoking of cannabis can negatively impact your lungs. Cannabis smoke does happen to contain many of the same toxins possessed in Tobacco. As such smoking puts you at high risk for contracting conditions such as chronic bronchitis, lung infections, and the injuring of cell linings of large airways. 

Cannabis and your brain - THC is mostly responsible for the way your brain and your body respond to cannabis. While for most people these are usually positive affects there are a few potential negative affects to be aware of that are associated with long term use.

  • Damage to your memory
  • Affects your ability to concentrate
  • Can affect IQ (in users who started at a younger age - this is widely debated among medical professionals)

Cannabis and your mental health - In rare cases long term consistent cannabis use has been linked to increased suicidal thoughts, and depression when compared to persons who use cannabis less frequently.

Being aware of the health risks associated with the use Cannabis allows you to make informed decisions about how you choose to consume it. The biggest lesson here is that all things are good in moderation.
